Launched in 1986 in Texas, the US, the Adopt-A-Beach program encourages businesses, organizations and schools to “adopt” their local beach and take care of it. The program has expanded to the rest of the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea introduced the program in 2020, and approximately 170 businesses and organizations have participated in the program in 113 beaches nationwide as of September 2023.

As part of the beach cleanup event, Haewoori Offshore Windfarm announced Gangdong Mongdol Beach in Ulsan as its adoptive beach, becoming the first offshore wind developer to join the Adopt-A-Beach program. About 20 participants including Haewoori Offshore Windfarm’s employees and local residents cleaned up the beach in the form of plogging, an activity of picking up litter while jogging or walking, along the coastline and Gangdong Mongdol Beach in Ulsan.

“Haewoori Offshore Windfarm prioritizes protecting the local environment and ecosystem in its offshore wind development” said Jonathan Spink, CEO of Haewoori Offshore Windfarm. “Starting with the adoption of Gangdong Mongdol Beach, Haewoori Offshore Windfarm is committed to improving the local environment and promoting shared growth with the local community in Ulsan by continuing its efforts to protect the environment and the ecosystem.”

Founded by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners/Copenhagen Offshore Partners Korea (CIP/COP Korea), the world’s largest green investment fund and leading developer of offshore wind energy, Haewoori Offshore Windfarm has obtained approval for the offshore wind business and currently developing three floating offshore projects with a total capacity of 1.5MW.
